The Capsticks Diploma in Clinical Risk and Claims Management is nationally regarded a leading training programme for clinical risk managers and claims managers, as well as practising clinicians looking to deepen their understanding of risk in practice.
Designed and delivered by experienced Capsticks lawyers and specialist risks and claims professionals, the diploma combines practical insight with lived experience. Delegates will gain a clear and structured understanding in best practice in risk and claims management.
The course will be conducted entirely online via Microsoft Teams, making it accessible wherever you are. Teaching also takes place across two virtual half-day sessions each month over six months.

- This opening two-day module explores why things go wrong in healthcare and how organisations can respond in a way that improves patient safety.
Delegates will have an introduction from the Course Director and receive sessions on patient safety incident reporting and the practical steps that support effective risk management – including a workshop on learning from incidents.
Group 1: 8 September and 9 September 2026 (10:00 - 13:00)
Group 2: 15 September and 16 September 2026 (10:00 - 13:00) - This module looks at the systems, standards and assurance processes that help organisations identify risk and act on learning. It includes the below sessions:
• Importance of Protocols and Guidelines
• Introduction to Inquests
• An Insider’s Guide to Claims and Inquest Management
Two case-study workshops also form part of this module, focusing on Serious Incidents and Inquests.
Group 1: 6 October and 7 October 2026 (10:00 - 13:00)
Group 2: 13 October and 14 October 2026 (10:00 - 13:00)
A practical introduction to the legal and ethical issues that arise when decisions need to be made about care and treatment.
Delegates will explore consent, refusal of treatment, best interests decision-making and the Court of Protection, with examples from healthcare settings which include:
• Capacity and Consent to Treatment
• Child Protection Law
• End of Life Decisions and Withdrawal of Treatment
There will be opportunity to explore these issues in more detail via two case study workshops.
Group 1: 10 November and 11 November 2026 (10:00 - 13:00)
Group 2: 17 November and 18 November 2026 (10:00 - 13:00)
- The Claims Management section of the course begins with an introduction to the legal framework for clinical negligence claims, including breach of duty, causation, limitation and quantification.
The module also looks at how to gather and assess evidence, obtain statements from clinicians and report on claims clearly and confidently with two practical workshops looking at applying the legal test and claims analysis.
Group 1: 12 January and 13 January 2027 (10:00 - 13:00)
Group 2: 19 January and 20 January 2027 (10:00 - 13:00) - This module follows the life of a claim, taking delegates through the stages of the litigation process from the first letter from solicitors through to resolution, mediation or trial.
There will be practical guidance on disclosure, working with clinicians to obtain factual evidence as well as insight into the steps taken to protect against fraud, assess whether compromise is needed and utilise dispute resolution to resolve sensitive or challenging claims.
An assignment will also be handed out to candidates at the end of this module.
Group 1: 9 February and 10 February 2027 (10:00 - 13:00)
Group 2: 23 February and 24 February 2027 (10:00 - 13:00)
The final two days of the Diploma focus on obstetric and catastrophic claims (such as amputations) which are often medically complex and highly sensitive.
This module explores common areas areas of risk, the factors that drive major claims and how organisations can learn from incidents to reduce future harm.
There will be two case study workshops covering obstetric and catastrophic claims.
We will also provide some guidance on exam technique in preparation for the final assessment.

The total cost of undertaking the Diploma course is £2,200 plus VAT. Self-funded students receive a 10% discount off their fees.
The course content and exam will be delivered fully online. Attendance at our offices is not required.
