Experience

Lauren is an information law specialist with expertise across advisory, contentious and transactional matters. She advises on all aspects of information law, including general compliance with the data protection legislation, the handling of data breaches, responding to complaints and information rights requests and disclosure of information under the data protection legislation, Freedom of Information Act and the Environmental Information Regulations.

Expertise

Lauren has experience of conducting data protection compliance audits, providing advice and support in responding to requests for information, providing strategic advice following data breaches, drafting and negotiating data protection provisions in contracts, including in relation to international data transfers and providing advice to NHS bodies in relation to appropriate handling of patient personal data for the purposes of research, development of AI and healthcare technologies.

Lauren also has advised on a number of contentious matters, such as defending an appeal to the First-Tier Tribunal in respect of data withheld from disclosure under exemptions in the Freedom of Information Act and defending data protection claims in respect of withholding information following a subject access request.

Notable projects

  • Successfully defended an NHS trust in relation to a data protection claim in respect of the trust’s decision to withhold the personal data of a child following a subject access request from the child’s father.
  • Successfully defending an appeal to the FTT on behalf of a local authority, defending its decision to refuse a FOIA request based on the requester being vexatious.
  • Conducted due diligence in relation to the data protection aspects of a substantial merger between housing associations.
