Gerard advises NHS and private health firm clients on various health law issues, with specific expertise in the areas of public law, information law, regulatory issues and inquests. Public law issues include consultation considerations, commissioning arrangements, eligibility criteria for treatment and judicial reviews.

In terms of information law, advice is regularly given to clients on DPA, FOIA and confidentiality issues. Advice on regulatory matters includes concerns over health professionals performance, including advising the CHRE, as well as care and quality issues for the provision of health and social care. As to inquests, advice and representation is regularly provided to both NHS and private clients, including representing Trent SHA during the Kingsway Inquests and the pharmaceutical company during the Sativex Inquest.
