Governance and board development
Good governance is essential for all public bodies. It underpins the Board’s ability to govern effectively and build public and stakeholder confidence.
Effective NHS boards demonstrate leadership by undertaking three key roles:
- Formulating strategy
- Ensuring accountability
- Shaping a positive culture
We provide governance and board development programmes in conjunction with the Good Governance Institute and others. These programmes include:
- Annual Board Review: reviewing board papers; observing a board meeting; providing immediate feedback and short report
- Review of Governance Structures: reviewing processes and committee structures; interviewing key people including some board members; identifying how well the processes work in practice and providing a report with recommendations
- Boards to Boards: in preparation for FT status or WCC panels, or as a diagnostic for any board, the board is interviewed by a constructed ‘board’ to test knowledge, performance, grip and team approach.
- Lock-ins: bringing a single or multiple boards together to resolve an issue or agree an approach with a commitment not to leave the room until success is achieved.
- Board Seminars: Equality and Diversity; Directors liabilities; Effective Board Assurance Frameworks.
- Workshops: learning lessons from incidents, complaints and claims.
